The Ohanaeze Progressive Council (OPC) has distanced itself from a statement attributed to the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), which declared members of the South-East Forum of Former Governors unwelcome in Igboland over their endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for a second term.

In a statement, OPC National President, Comrade Ugo Benjamin, condemned the position of the OYC, describing it as reckless and inconsistent with Igbo values and traditions.

He stressed that respect for elders and leaders remains a core principle in Igbo culture, faulting what he called an attempt by a group of youths to publicly disparage accomplished leaders.

“These are respected statesmen who have served the region with distinction. Declaring them outcasts is not only inappropriate but also a clear departure from our cultural norms,” Benjamin said.

He commended the former governors for their contributions to the development of the South-East and their continued involvement in national affairs, describing their endorsement of Tinubu as a strategic decision rather than an act of disloyalty.

According to him, the move reflects a calculated effort to advance the region’s interests through cooperation and political engagement at the national level.

Benjamin also expressed support for President Tinubu, noting that his administration has created opportunities for greater inclusion of the South-East.

He argued that meaningful progress for the region would come through collaboration rather than confrontation, urging critics to adopt a more pragmatic approach.

The OPC leader further accused the OYC of seeking attention and potentially acting in ways that could deepen divisions within the region ahead of the 2027 elections.

He called on Igbo stakeholders to disregard the statement and instead support leaders working toward unity and development.

Benjamin also warned against continued attacks on prominent leaders, stating that such actions could undermine collective progress.

Reaffirming the council’s position, he said the OPC remains committed to promoting responsible leadership and encouraging unity among the Igbo people while supporting initiatives that strengthen their role within the broader Nigerian framework.
