The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has commenced an investigation into a suspected data breach involving the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
The probe, initiated under Section 46(3) of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, highlights the Commission’s commitment to safeguarding trust and ensuring the integrity of Nigeria’s digital and economic systems.
In a statement, the NDPC expressed concern over the increasing sophistication of cyber threats, noting that malicious actors are constantly evolving new techniques to infiltrate and compromise critical national databases.
The Commission explained that the investigation will examine key areas, including access control procedures, data privacy impact assessments, vulnerability assessments, and penetration testing measures. It will also assess compliance and due diligence processes involving third-party data handlers.
Despite the development, the NDPC reassured the public that Nigeria’s data protection framework remains robust, both technologically and institutionally. It added that the continued growth in digital services adoption reflects sustained public confidence in the country’s data security systems.
