Factional Split Hits Lagos NMA as Rival Leaders Emerge

The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has been thrown into turmoil after a disputed leadership change led to the emergence of parallel authorities within the body.

Trouble began when a group of members announced a leadership reshuffle, citing dissatisfaction with the chairman’s handling of administrative affairs and alleging non-compliance with internal guidelines. The move quickly divided the association, with some members backing the decision while others condemned it.

In a swift response, the chairman dismissed the action as a coordinated attempt to destabilize the association. He argued that no legitimate process was followed and described the development as unconstitutional.

Meanwhile, supporters of the new leadership insist their actions were necessary to restore order and accountability, claiming that concerns had been raised repeatedly without resolution.

The standoff has created uncertainty within the association, with both camps asserting authority and mobilizing support. Observers warn that if unresolved, the crisis could weaken the influence of the NMA in Lagos and disrupt its role in addressing key health sector issues.
