Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Nigerians to reject the growing influence of tribal and religious sentiments in the country’s political space, describing such narratives as distractions from real issues affecting citizens.
Speaking on the state of the nation, Obi stressed that economic hardship cuts across all ethnic and religious lines, noting that no group enjoys special privileges when it comes to the rising cost of living. According to him, the challenges facing Nigerians are universal, making identity-based politics both misleading and harmful.
He argued that politicians who rely on tribal or religious affiliations often do so to mask a lack of competence and credible qualifications. Obi maintained that leadership positions should be occupied by individuals with the capacity to deliver results, rather than those who exploit divisions for personal gain.
The former Anambra State governor urged voters to prioritize merit, integrity, and vision when choosing leaders, emphasizing that national progress depends on unity and accountability.
Obi’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about the role of identity in Nigeria’s elections, with many observers echoing his call for a shift toward issue-based politics.
