The Edo State Police Command has begun an intensive rescue operation after armed attackers ambushed a commercial bus along the Lagos–Benin Expressway, leaving one person dead and several passengers abducted.
The incident occurred on Saturday, April 18, 2026, around 6:00 p.m. near the Iguobazuwa axis. The victims were travelling in a GUO Transport Company bus when suspected kidnappers intercepted the vehicle and opened fire. The driver was fatally shot during the attack.
Police sources confirmed that one female passenger who sustained gunshot injuries was rescued at the scene and is currently receiving treatment in stable condition.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full-scale rescue operation across the Benin–Ore corridor and adjoining forests. The operation involves the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, tactical police teams, local hunters, and vigilante groups working together to track down the assailants and secure the victims’ release.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, at least three passengers were taken into the forest by the gunmen, although initial reports suggested varying figures.
Authorities have since recovered the attacked vehicle, while the driver’s body has been deposited in a hospital mortuary. Investigations are ongoing as security forces intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible.
The police have appealed to members of the public to remain calm and provide any useful information that could aid the rescue mission. Residents and commuters are also advised to follow official updates as the search operation continues.
