Massive Blaze Destroys Onion Stocks Worth Millions in Sokoto Community

Thousands of bags of onions have been lost to a fire incident that swept through a farming settlement in Sokoto State, causing heavy financial damage to local traders and farmers.

The fire, which erupted in Kojiyo area of Goronyo Local Government, consumed multiple storage shelters where agricultural produce had been kept after harvest. By the time it was contained, a total of 2,275 bags of onions had been reduced to ashes, with losses estimated at around N56.8 million.

Eyewitnesses said the flames spread rapidly across the storage structures, making it difficult for residents to salvage any of the produce. Fortunately, no deaths or injuries were reported in the incident.

The affected farmers have been left counting significant losses, as onions are a major source of livelihood in the region. Community members say the destruction has created serious economic hardship for those impacted.

Authorities are expected to look into the cause of the fire, while calls have begun for urgent assistance to help the victims recover from the setback.
