The Abia State Police Command has announced a sweeping reorganisation, disbanding all existing tactical teams and replacing them with a newly formed unit to handle critical security operations.
In a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, the move was described as part of broader efforts by police authorities to strengthen professionalism, improve accountability, and ensure officers operate within the bounds of the law.
The newly created unit, named the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), has been tasked with addressing serious criminal activities across the state. It will be led by a senior officer and is expected to focus on swift and disciplined responses to threats.
Officials disclosed that members of the unit have undergone intensive training and orientation to prepare them for their responsibilities, with particular emphasis on ethical conduct and respect for citizens’ rights.
To promote transparency, the command also introduced a monitoring system involving community stakeholders such as traditional rulers, legal experts, and civil society representatives, who will help oversee the activities of the unit.
The police leadership reiterated its commitment to intelligence-led policing and warned that any form of misconduct, including harassment or extortion, would not be tolerated under the new structure.
