Feeling Tired, Bloated or Frequently Sick? Nutritionists Highlight Fruits That Can Help

Fruits are among the easiest foods to include in daily meals, yet many people still overlook their health benefits. Nutrition experts say certain fruits can help manage common health concerns such as fatigue, poor digestion and frequent illness—though they stress that fruits should complement, not replace, proper medical care.

Speaking with Guardian Life, clinical nutritionist and digital health creator Odukoya Fiyinfoluwa, alongside nutrition and dietetics specialist Etim Anthony Goodness, explained that consistent fruit consumption can support overall well-being.

Odukoya noted that guava is particularly beneficial for boosting immunity. Rich in vitamin C—even more than oranges—it helps strengthen the immune system and protect the body from infections, while its antioxidants guard against cell damage.

For those struggling with low energy, bananas are a practical choice. They provide natural sugars for quick energy and contain potassium, which supports muscle function and helps reduce fatigue. Their easy digestibility also makes them suitable for children and individuals recovering from illness.

Pawpaw (papaya), he added, is effective for improving digestion. It contains papain, an enzyme that aids food breakdown, while its fibre content can help relieve constipation.

Oranges offer a dual benefit of hydration and immune support due to their high water and vitamin C content. They may also promote skin health and aid wound healing, making them especially useful in hot climates.

Apples are another valuable option, thanks to their high fibre content, particularly pectin, which supports gut health, regulates digestion and promotes a feeling of fullness, helping to control appetite.

Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that aids digestion and may reduce inflammation, although it should be consumed in moderation by those with sensitive stomachs.

Watermelon, largely composed of water, is excellent for hydration and contains antioxidants like lycopene that support heart health, especially in warm weather.

Avocado, though often overlooked as a fruit, is highly nutrient-dense. It contains healthy fats that promote heart health and assist in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, making it beneficial for both adults and children.

Etim emphasized that while fruits can support health, they are not cures. “Fruits can help manage minor health issues, but they should not replace proper medical treatment,” she said.

She highlighted vitamin C-rich fruits such as oranges and strawberries for supporting immunity, noting they may help the body fight infections and slightly reduce the duration of colds.

For digestive issues like constipation, she recommended fibre-rich options such as apples (with the skin) and ripe bananas to improve bowel movement.

In cases of mild dehydration or fatigue, water-rich fruits like watermelon and coconut water can help rehydrate the body, though they are not substitutes for oral rehydration solutions in severe cases.

Etim also pointed out that apples and avocados may support heart health over time by helping to manage cholesterol levels due to their fibre and healthy fat content.

Both experts agreed that persistent or serious health conditions require professional medical attention.
