The Nigeria Police Force has pledged to ensure justice following the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State, and confirmed that the officer involved will face disciplinary action.
Police spokesperson, Anthony Placid, said the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, and involved a suspect identified as Mene Ogidi.
According to preliminary reports, officers from the Effurun Area Command had responded to credible intelligence from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway. The suspect had reportedly been apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to send a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
Placid explained that while officers were trying to take the suspect into custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm in violation of established regulations, leading to the suspect’s death.
In response, police authorities have ordered the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. They are expected to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for appropriate sanctions, including possible prosecution.
The Inspector-General of Police also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that the matter would be handled in line with the law.
He urged members of the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course, reiterating the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, abuse of authority, and extra-judicial actions.
