UMUAHIA – The member representing Umuahia Central State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Chinasa Anthony, has assured residents affected by the recent demolition of shanties in parts of Umuahia that government remains committed to balancing security concerns with the welfare of citizens.
Speaking during an inspection visit to the demolition site, the lawmaker, popularly known as Abiola, explained that insecurity was one of the major reasons behind the government’s decision to remove the makeshift structures. According to him, many of the shanties had become hideouts for criminal elements who exploited the locations, especially at night, to perpetrate unlawful activities.
He stated that the demolition exercise was part of broader efforts by the administration of Alex Otti to improve security, restore environmental sanity, and create a safer atmosphere for residents and businesses operating within the area.
Hon. Anthony noted that his visit to the site was aimed at assessing the situation firsthand and engaging stakeholders on possible solutions. He assured affected traders and residents that where there are practical and lawful opportunities to restore business activities in the area, he would work with relevant authorities to ensure such measures are considered.
The lawmaker called on residents to remain peaceful, orderly, and understanding while government continues to implement policies designed to promote the overall development of the state. He emphasized that security and public safety remain top priorities and urged citizens to cooperate with authorities in achieving those objectives.
Hon. Anthony also expressed appreciation to community leaders for their maturity and cooperation throughout the process. He specifically commended the President General, the traditional Prime Minister, elders, youth leaders, and other stakeholders for maintaining peace and supporting government efforts aimed at improving the community.
Reaffirming his commitment to effective representation, the Umuahia Central legislator assured the people that he would continue to champion legislative initiatives and constituency projects that would positively impact the community and the constituency at large. He further pledged to relay the concerns and feedback gathered during the visit to the appropriate government authorities for necessary action.
In their response, members of the community applauded the lawmaker for personally visiting the site and listening to their concerns. They described the visit as a demonstration of responsive leadership and expressed confidence in his ability to represent their interests effectively.
The residents also used the occasion to reaffirm their support for Governor Alex Otti and his administration. According to community leaders and stakeholders present, the governor’s achievements in infrastructure development, urban renewal, and governance have earned him widespread support across the area. They declared their readiness to support his re-election bid in 2027, insisting that his leadership has brought significant progress to Abia State.
The visit ended with assurances of continued engagement between government representatives and community stakeholders as efforts continue to enhance security, improve infrastructure, and create a more conducive environment for economic activities in Umuahia Central.
