ABIA, NIGERIA – Former Minister of State for Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Uche Ogah, has called on Abians and Nigerians across the country to remain steadfast in their commitment to democratic ideals, expressing optimism that the nation’s challenges will ultimately give way to greater progress and prosperity.
Speaking to Newsmasters Newspapers on the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Dr. Ogah described June 12 as a historic reminder of the sacrifices made by patriotic Nigerians in the struggle for democratic governance and the collective responsibility of citizens to protect and strengthen the nation’s democracy.
He noted that democracy remains the most effective platform through which citizens can freely express their aspirations, participate in governance, and contribute to the development of their communities and the nation at large.
Addressing the people of Abia State, Dr. Ogah commended the peaceful democratic atmosphere being enjoyed in the state and encouraged citizens to continue supporting initiatives that promote good governance, accountability, development, and the rule of law.
According to him, sustaining democracy requires active participation from both leaders and citizens, stressing that political differences should never undermine the common goal of building a stronger and more prosperous society.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, I urge Abians to remain united and continue to uphold the democratic values that guarantee peace, stability, and development in our state. Democracy flourishes where citizens are engaged, responsible, and committed to the common good,” he stated.
Dr. Ogah also acknowledged the economic and social difficulties currently facing many Nigerians but emphasized that periods of national challenge should not diminish the people’s hope or belief in the country’s immense potential.
He maintained that Nigeria possesses the human resources, entrepreneurial spirit, and natural endowments necessary to overcome present obstacles and emerge stronger, urging citizens not to surrender to despair.
“The story of Nigeria has always been one of resilience. As a people, we have consistently demonstrated the capacity to overcome adversity. I encourage Nigerians everywhere to remain hopeful, hardworking, and confident that brighter days lie ahead for our nation,” he said.
Dr. Ogah concluded by wishing Abians and Nigerians a peaceful Democracy Day celebration, urging them to continue believing in democracy as a vehicle for sustainable development, justice, unity, and national progress.
