US Issues Stern Warning to Visa Overstayers, Cites Risk of Deportation and Permanent Ban

The United States government has issued a strong warning to foreign nationals, urging strict adherence to visa terms and cautioning that overstaying a visa can lead to severe immigration consequences.

In a statement released on Monday, the US embassy emphasized that individuals who remain in the country beyond their authorized period could face deportation and be permanently barred from re-entering the United States. The warning reaffirms existing US immigration policy, which mandates strict compliance with visa durations.

This advisory comes amid growing concerns over rising migration rates, particularly among young Africans pursuing educational and economic opportunities in the US. According to the US Department of Homeland Security, visa overstays account for a significant number of annual immigration violations, prompting immigration authorities to tighten enforcement and expand awareness efforts.

US law stipulates that individuals who stay beyond their permitted time may be subject to a three- or ten-year reentry ban, and in some instances, could be permanently prohibited from returning to the country.

For Nigerians and other foreign nationals considering travel to the US for study or relocation, the advisory highlights the importance of respecting immigration laws, as international scrutiny on migration continues to intensify.
