CUPP Slams Governor Okpebholo Over Threat to Peter Obi

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has strongly condemned Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, over his recent threat to former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

In a statement issued on Friday, CUPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Peter Ameh, described the governor’s comments as “disgraceful” and an act of “thuggery” unbecoming of a public officeholder in a democratic society.

Ameh said Okpebholo’s threat — warning Obi against visiting Edo State without his consent and declaring his safety was not guaranteed — amounted to a veiled death threat and a violation of Obi’s constitutional right to freedom of movement.

“Governor Okpebholo’s recorded remarks that Obi would have himself to blame if anything happened to him in Edo is deeply troubling. It reveals a blatant disregard for the Nigerian Constitution and sets a dangerous precedent,” Ameh stated.

CUPP further warned that such statements undermine Nigeria’s democracy and called on political leaders, civil society groups, and the international community to publicly condemn the governor’s behavior.

“This is an unacceptable and undemocratic act. It threatens the very fabric of our nation’s democracy and reflects a level of arrogance that must not be tolerated,” CUPP said.

The coalition urged Nigerians to remain vigilant in defending their constitutional rights and to hold elected officials accountable for actions that endanger democratic norms.
