A three-storey private student hostel, Pentagon Lodge, located in Izzangbo Ohankwu Village near the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State, collapsed following prolonged rainfall. Fortunately, no lives were lost, though students’ belongings were trapped in the debris. Some students suffered minor distress but no serious injuries were reported.

In a swift response, the Ebonyi State Government sealed off the collapsed building and nearby structures pending integrity tests. Students residing in the lodge were evacuated to prevent further risk. The Commissioner for Capital City Development, Chief Sunday Ekechi Inyima, who led a team to the site, directed that the property be sealed and ordered an immediate investigation into the cause of the structural failure.

The government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Capital Development, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Ikwo Local Government Chairman, and AE-FUNAI management, is arranging temporary accommodation for the displaced students. AE-FUNAI’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunday Elom, expressed concern over the prevalence of poorly constructed private buildings, stressing the urgent need for stricter enforcement of building regulations.

Elom praised the quick intervention of the state government, expressed gratitude that no lives were lost, and sympathised with the affected students. He called for a full-scale investigation to hold accountable any contractors, engineers, or regulators found responsible for the incident. The university has assured students of full support, urging them to liaise with the Student Union Government (SUG) and the Dean of Students Affairs for documentation and assistance. As of press time, emergency and safety assessments at the site are ongoing, with nearby residents on alert.
