President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s Super Falcons on their remarkable triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they secured a record-extending 10th continental title.

In a thrilling final held at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, the Super Falcons came from two goals down to defeat the host nation 3-2, delivering one of the most memorable comebacks in tournament history.

President Tinubu’s congratulatory message was conveyed in a statement by his spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, shortly after the final whistle on Saturday.

Hailing the team’s performance, Tinubu said, “The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit.

“With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for. The nation looks forward to welcoming our champions. Congratulations! Nigeria celebrates you.”

Prior to the final, President Tinubu had posted a message of support on his official X handle, urging the team to make history and commending their performance throughout the tournament.

He wrote, “My beloved Super Falcons! Your performance at this tournament over the past three weeks has been awe-inspiring. You have represented our country with pride, honour, and strength. On and off the pitch, you have shown true sportsmanship.”

Morocco started strongly in the final, taking a 2-0 lead in the first half through Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy. However, the Falcons responded with a spirited second-half display.

Esther Okoronkwo pulled one back from the penalty spot, then provided the assist for Folashade Ijamilusi’s equaliser. The comeback was completed when Jennifer Echegini scored a dramatic late winner from a set piece.

The victory not only reaffirmed Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football but also united the nation in celebration.
