In a commendable act of compassion and recognition, the Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has approved a special executive waiver for the employment of Mrs. Akaniro Gethrude Chinyere. Mrs. Chinyere, wife of a visually impaired teacher at Ozuitem Secondary School, had been voluntarily assisting her husband in teaching duties, displaying exceptional dedication to the academic growth of students in their community.
Her appointment letter was officially presented by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Basic and Secondary Education, Sir Kenechukwu Nwosu, on Sunday, August 3rd. The heartwarming story of the blind teacher and his wife had earlier gone viral on social media, prompting Governor Otti to take immediate action by dispatching his aide to assess and respond to the situation at the school.
This intervention has brought about significant change — not only for Mrs. Chinyere and her husband — but also for the broader Ozuitem community in Bende LGA. The Governor’s larger effort in the education sector has seen the recruitment of over 5,380 teachers, helping to improve the student-teacher ratio and enhance learning conditions across the state, including the Ozuitem Secondary School with its over 350 students.
Mrs. Chinyere and her husband expressed deep gratitude, moved by the Governor’s thoughtful gesture. This act underscores Governor Otti’s enduring commitment to educational development and the well-being of Abians.
