The Rivers State Police Command has condemned the assault of a police officer by some community youths in Nkpolu, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, after a video of the incident went viral.
In a statement signed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the police confirmed that Inspector Joshua Nyian, attached to Woji Division, was allegedly attacked and robbed by the Nkpolu Youth President and about 20 youths on August 24, 2025.
According to the report, the incident occurred around 10:20 a.m. when Inspector Nyian visited his pregnant girlfriend in the community. The officer alleged that the youths accosted him, beat him, dragged him to the main road, and forcefully took his phone and police identity card.
He further claimed that the youths recorded the assault on video and extorted ₦78,000 from him. The officer also alleged that the attack may have been motivated by personal rivalry, as the Youth President had reportedly been making advances toward his girlfriend.
SP Iringe-Koko confirmed that the officer’s statement had been documented, and a medical form was issued for his treatment. She urged those involved to present their evidence to the police, stressing that justice would be served.
The Police Command also cautioned community leaders to advise their youths against resorting to jungle justice, assuring the public of a thorough investigation into the matter.
The incident has sparked concerns over the safety of security personnel and underscored the need for peaceful conflict resolution in communities across the state.
