Two suspects have been arrested in Makhaza, Cape Flats, after police discovered prohibited firearms and ammunition during a high-density operation.
Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi confirmed that officers attached to Operation Shanela intercepted a suspicious vehicle during a roadblock along Japhta K Masemola Drive, opposite the local taxi rank. The operation followed a deadly shooting in the area the previous day.
“When the driver of the Toyota LDV noticed police presence, he attempted to change direction but was forced to remain in his lane and brought to a halt,” Swartbooi said.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers found an AK-47 assault rifle, a 9mm pistol, and ammunition. The two occupants were immediately taken into custody.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court once formal charges are filed.
Police say the operation is part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on gang-related violence and the circulation of illegal firearms in crime-ridden communities.
