The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, has withdrawn his earlier assertion that there was no agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), clarifying that the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement remains valid and enforceable.

In a statement issued on Friday, Alausa acknowledged that the 2009 agreement is legally binding and currently in effect.

The clarification followed his comments to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, where he had described ASUU’s position as a mere draft without a signed agreement — a claim swiftly rejected by the union.

Alausa further noted that while the 2009 and 2011 agreements often cited by ASUU originated from negotiation recommendations, they still carry legal weight.
