Maresca Says Early Red Card Cost Chelsea in Old Trafford Defeat

Reactions have continued to trail Manchester United’s hard-fought 2-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Red Devils secured only their second league victory of the season against the World Champions in a heated contest that produced two red cards and seven yellow cards.

Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, was dismissed just five minutes into the game for fouling Bryan Mbeumo outside the box. Coach Enzo Maresca was forced to substitute Estevao Willian for Filip Jorgensen and later replaced Pedro Neto with Tosin Adarabioyo.

Bruno Fernandes capitalized on the numerical advantage, firing United ahead nine minutes later. Chelsea’s woes deepened when Cole Palmer limped off with a groin injury, and Casemiro doubled the hosts’ lead in the 37th minute before being sent off for two yellow cards before halftime.

Trevor Chalobah gave Chelsea late hope with a powerful header ten minutes from time, but United held on for a much-needed win that eased pressure on manager Ruben Amorim.

Speaking after the match, Maresca blamed the early red card for changing the course of the game.
“The red card changed the game after three minutes. We needed to start better. You cannot concede a red card at Old Trafford that early,” he said.

United boss Amorim admitted the dismissal helped his side but praised his players for their intensity.
“Every win is important, especially at this moment. The red card helped us, but we were already aggressive and creating chances,” he noted.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes, who netted his 100th goal for United in the encounter, hailed the fighting spirit of his teammates.
“At the end of the game we were very strong in defending our box. I’m very proud of the milestone, but what matters is helping the team win,” he said.

The result lifted United to 10th on the table with seven points from five matches, while Chelsea slipped to sixth with eight points.

United will next face Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday, while Chelsea shift focus to a League Cup tie against Lincoln City on Tuesday.
