The Abia State Government (ABSG) has completed the installation of a modern material testing laboratory in Umuahia, in a strategic effort to ensure top-quality engineering and building projects across the state.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing journalists at the Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Prince Kanu recalled that the government had earlier announced plans to establish the facility, stressing that it is now fully operational.

“The laboratory has the capacity to conduct concrete testing, soil testing, aggregate testing, asphalt flexible pavement testing, steel reinforcement testing, non-destructive testing, field testing, and several other services. Its installation will ensure very high-quality standards for engineering and building projects in Abia State,” he stated.

On Abia Hotel Limited, Umuahia, the Information Commissioner revealed that the government has reached advanced stages in its revitalisation plan, noting that the move aligns with Governor Otti’s policy of reviving moribund state-owned assets.

“The recovery process of Abia Hotel is already at an advanced stage. No state asset will be allowed to waste or be misappropriated under this administration,” he added.

He further announced that the Abia TechRise ICT Training Cohort 2 will commence on September 25, 2025, following the completion of the verification of 850 successful applicants. The programme, he said, is designed to empower young people with ICT skills relevant for the 21st century.

In addition, Prince Kanu disclosed that the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, in collaboration with local councils, has initiated an Agricultural Intervention Project under the state’s Food Security Programme. The project will not only boost food supply but also create jobs and empower Abians.

He said construction of four prototype markets across the 17 LGAs will begin within two weeks, with the facilities featuring 40 stalls each, solar-powered lighting, public conveniences, mobile facilities, and charging stations.

Updating on sports and technology initiatives, the Commissioner noted that the Abia Soccerfest competition is ongoing across the 17 LGAs, while the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation will host the International Leaders’ Summit from September 22 to 25, 2025. The summit aims to foster collaboration between government and entrepreneurs to enhance product quality and expand exports.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, and the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, Mr. Kingsley Agomuo, were also present at the briefing.
