Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has hinted that he may support a successor from within his current administration as part of efforts to ensure policy continuity and sustainable development beyond his tenure.

Speaking on Thursday during the Stakeholders’ Consultative and Engagement Meeting on the 2026 Budget, held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, the governor said the idea is to build on the existing developmental roadmap of his government.

Makinde, whose second term ends in 2027, noted that while the final decision on who emerges as governor rests with the people of Oyo State, he may recommend someone who shares his administration’s vision and understands its developmental direction.

“If we put anybody forward from our team, it means we have evaluated that individual. It’s not about the person alone, but about ensuring continuity. If we already have a roadmap for Oyo State’s development beyond 2027 and people within the team have bought into it, that would be the best path forward,” he said.

The governor emphasized that the people of Oyo State have become more politically enlightened and will choose candidates based on competence rather than political slogans or sentiment.

“The decision on who becomes the next governor rests with the people of Oyo State. We will only make our own recommendation because our people no longer engage in stunt politics they now ask questions and demand accountability,” Makinde added.

Political observers say Makinde’s remarks signal the beginning of a succession plan aimed at preserving his administration’s achievements and policy framework after his exit.

The development has begun to draw attention to key figures within his cabinet and political circle, as speculation grows over who might be chosen to continue his legacy.

Governor Makinde, who first assumed office in 2019 and won re-election in 2023, has earned praise for his infrastructural renewal projects, fiscal discipline, and people-oriented governance style.
