Prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has pledged to assemble a team of legal experts to compel the Nigerian government to deliver environmental justice and compensation to the people of the Niger Delta.

Falana made the announcement while delivering the keynote address at the 30th Anniversary Memorial Lecture in honour of the late environmental activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa. The event, held in Rivers State, was themed “Ken Saro-Wiwa: The Man, His Legacies, Struggles, and Challenges.”

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria said the legal team would pursue cases aimed at reclaiming devastated farmlands, restoring community dignity, and securing long-denied social amenities for residents of the oil-producing region.

Expressing dismay over the poor living conditions in the Niger Delta despite its vast oil wealth, Falana described the situation as unacceptable.

> “We are gathered here not only to remember Ken Saro-Wiwa but to continue his struggle in concrete terms,” he said. “From the discussions today, I have resolved to set up a team of lawyers committed to environmental justice. We will initiate a major legal battle to force the Nigerian government to reclaim your destroyed land, restore your integrity, and provide your communities with the social amenities you deserve.”

Falana further noted that decades after Saro-Wiwa’s death, the environmental degradation and neglect that sparked his activism persist, calling for renewed action to hold authorities accountable.

He stressed that the forthcoming legal campaign would stand as a tribute to Saro-Wiwa’s enduring legacy as a symbol of resistance and justice for the oppressed people of the Niger Delta.
