Trump’s Remarks on Killings in Nigeria Reflect the Truth – Senator Orji Kalu

Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has backed recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump on insecurity in Nigeria, asserting that the American leader merely echoed the harsh reality on ground.

Speaking with journalists at the National Assembly in Abuja, Kalu said Trump’s remarks on religiously motivated killings should not be dismissed as falsehood, emphasizing that both Christians and Muslims have suffered greatly at the hands of extremists.

> “Let’s be honest, what Donald Trump said is not untrue. Nigerians are being killed, Christians and Muslims alike,” he stated. “In Plateau, the victims are mostly Christians; in Zamfara, they are Muslims. These are jihadists who want to destroy Nigeria, and we must call them out for what they are.”

Kalu, who maintains close ties with influential American political figures, revealed that he had spoken with two former U.S. presidents, one Democrat and one Republican, as well as more than 60 U.S. lawmakers who expressed willingness to assist Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.

He suggested that Trump’s statement may have been based on verified U.S. intelligence.

> “Before President Trump made his comment, I am certain American intelligence agencies had confirmed the situation. You can already see that the Nigerian Air Force has intensified its operations, likely following intelligence collaboration with the U.S.,” Kalu added.

Identifying himself as pro-America, the senator urged the Nigerian government to strengthen cooperation with Washington, while calling on citizens and the media to support security agencies by exposing extremist networks in their communities.

However, Kalu also blamed the U.S. and its Western allies for contributing to the spread of arms and instability in Africa following the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein.

> “America partly created this crisis. After Gaddafi and Saddam were killed, weapons flooded the continent. Still, as the leader of the free world, the U.S. has a duty to help restore order,” he said.

Kalu expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, commending the administration’s military efforts in the North and urging Nigerians to be patient as reforms take effect.

He dismissed rumours of any plot to remove the Senate President, stressing that the upper chamber remains united in its support for the president’s economic agenda.

> “At the beginning, there were talks about plans to remove the Senate President. But today, everything is calm. The Senate is focused on making laws to help President Tinubu address economic challenges,” Kalu noted.

On the rising wave of political defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kalu insisted that no one was being coerced.

> “No one is forcing anybody to join the APC, not me, not the Senate President, not even the President. I work 100% for the APC and will campaign for every APC candidate,” he affirmed.

Speaking on politics in Anambra State, Kalu predicted that Governor Chukwuma Soludo would soon align with the ruling party.

> “Soludo is a progressive — like President Tinubu, like me, like the Senate President. He has no choice but to join us in the APC once his court cases are over,” he declared.

Assessing Tinubu’s prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections, Kalu declared that the president remains the most formidable political figure in the country.

> “The 2027 election will be Tinubu versus Tinubu. There’s no united opposition. Our party is strong, stable, and connected to the people,” he said.

Kalu acknowledged the economic hardships currently faced by Nigerians but expressed optimism that the government’s policies would yield long-term benefits.

> “As a businessman, I understand the pain, but I also see progress. The macroeconomic indices are improving; the challenge now is to ensure that relief reaches ordinary Nigerians,” he concluded.
