Lagos APC Faults Peter Obi Over Comments on Nnamdi Kanu’s Life Sentence

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for his reaction to the life sentence handed to IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement released on Sunday and signed by its spokesperson, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, the party accused Obi of politicising a sensitive national security issue and attempting to remain politically relevant.

Obi had described Kanu’s arrest, prolonged detention, and sentencing as “unfortunate,” suggesting that the development exposed leadership failures and could escalate tensions instead of easing them.

The APC, however, dismissed Obi’s comments as hypocritical, alleging that he has consistently ignored IPOB’s violent activities while pretending to advocate for justice. The party further queried what it described as Obi’s double standards, condemning Boko Haram in the North while appearing to defend IPOB in the South-East.

According to the APC, Obi’s comments were driven by desperation to revive what they termed his “failed political career.” The party maintained that national security cannot be compromised to satisfy political interests or ethnic sentiments.

They insisted that matters involving treason and terrorism would continue to be handled by the Federal Government with full constitutional authority.

The statement added that Nigerians should disregard Obi’s remarks, describing them as an attempt to gain sympathy ahead of the 2027 elections.

The APC also urged Obi to admit if he is only committed to defending regional interests, instead of presenting himself as a neutral national figure.

The party reiterated that Nigeria’s sovereignty and security remain paramount, stressing that the government would not yield to political pressure on issues involving national stability.
