Sharia Law Poses No Threat to Christians in Bauchi — Traditional Ruler

A traditional leader in Bauchi State has dismissed claims that the implementation of Sharia law threatens Christians or their religious freedom. Speaking with journalists, the Danmalikin Bauchi, Aminu Danmaliki, described such concerns as based on misinformation and misunderstanding.

He explained that Sharia law applies strictly to Muslims and does not have authority over non-Muslims, stressing that Christians are not subjected to its provisions. According to him, the portrayal of Sharia as harmful to Christians is often driven by fear or political motives rather than facts.

Danmaliki defended the system as being in line with constitutional provisions, noting that its core values include justice, fairness, and the protection of lives and property. He also said Nigeria’s legal structure already recognizes multiple systems — including common law, customary law, and Sharia — catering to the beliefs and customs of different groups.

He concluded that the coexistence of these legal systems reflects Nigeria’s diversity and should promote mutual understanding rather than division.
