Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Army has dismissed allegations made by a dismissed lance corporal, Rotimi Olamilekan, popularly known as “Soja Boi,” describing his claims about inadequate equipment and poor welfare as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the Army responded to a viral interview in which Olamilekan alleged that soldiers were compelled to purchase their own uniforms and protective gear. The military clarified that his dismissal was not connected to whistleblowing, but rather to repeated acts of indiscipline, including breaches of the Armed Forces Social Media Policy and the unauthorized use of his military identity for personal gain.
The Army firmly rejected the claim that personnel are required to procure their own operational equipment, stressing that the provision of uniforms, helmets, and bulletproof vests is an institutional responsibility handled through designated ordnance units. It added that no soldier is deployed to any operational environment without being properly equipped. While acknowledging that some personnel may choose to acquire additional items for personal comfort, it said such decisions are optional and not due to any institutional shortfall.
On welfare and remuneration, the Army stated that its personnel receive a range of benefits beyond basic salary. These include uniform allowances, Ration Cash Allowances, and additional entitlements for those serving in operational theatres such as Operation HADIN KAI. It described Olamilekan’s assertions that soldiers do not receive supplementary benefits as inaccurate, reiterating its commitment to troop welfare.
The Army cautioned that such claims could erode public confidence in the institution and urged the public to disregard what it termed unfounded allegations.
