The Edo State Government has begun settling long-outstanding gratuities owed to retired teachers and local government staff, bringing relief to beneficiaries who had waited for years.

The payment exercise covers workers who exited the civil service around 2012, with funds released from a special allocation aimed at reducing accumulated pension arrears across the state.

Officials say the initiative is part of a broader effort to address delayed retirement benefits and improve welfare support for elderly former public servants who have been affected by years of backlog.

Many of the beneficiaries expressed gratitude as they received their entitlements, describing the development as a long-awaited relief after extended financial hardship.

State authorities also indicated that the process will continue in phases, with additional batches of retirees expected to be paid as more funds are made available.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to clearing all outstanding obligations while ensuring a more structured and timely payment system for pensioners going forward.
