The Supreme Court of Nigeria has approved an accelerated hearing of the appeal filed by the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in a move aimed at resolving the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.

At proceedings on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the apex court directed all parties involved to file their legal documents within five days and scheduled April 22, 2026, for the next hearing.

The court’s decision underscores the urgency attached to the case, which is considered critical to determining the legitimacy of the PDP’s leadership structure. During the session, a rival faction linked to Nyesom Wike and President Bola Tinubu had initially sought 20 days to respond. Although both sides later agreed on a 10-day timeline, the court reduced it to five days to ensure a swift resolution.

The legal dispute is widely viewed as a pivotal moment for the opposition party, as the outcome could shape its internal structure and influence its preparedness ahead of the 2027 general elections.

With the hearing date now set, attention has shifted to the Supreme Court, where a ruling is expected to have significant political implications.
