Abuja, Nigeria – Senate President Godswill Akpabio has blamed the recent spike in insecurity across the country on political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, alleging that the violence is being sponsored by opponents of the current administration.

Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, during the inauguration of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) Corporate Headquarters in Abuja. He described the current security challenges as politically motivated and expressed confidence that the situation would improve shortly after the elections.

According to him, the surge in violence is driven by individuals who are seeking relevance ahead of the polls. He predicted that within two weeks after the 2027 elections, the insecurity would subside.

The Senate President also criticized opposition figures, taking a swipe at Peter Obi over his change of political platform. He argued that the opposition is disorganized and unable to match the performance of President Bola Tinubu, suggesting that this has contributed to efforts to destabilize the country.

The event was attended by top government officials, including President Tinubu, who commissioned the 16-storey NRS headquarters. The building marks a major milestone for the agency following its transition from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the Nigeria Revenue Service in 2025.
