A White House ceremony celebrating the University of Georgia’s women’s tennis championship has triggered criticism online after a group photograph appeared to obscure the athletes behind officials and coaches.
The team visited Washington on Tuesday as part of a traditional event honouring NCAA champions. In a photo shared by a White House aide, Donald Trump stood in the front row alongside five male Georgia staff members and coaches, while the 11 women players were positioned behind them on raised steps.
The arrangement quickly drew attention on social media, with critics arguing that the composition made the athletes less visible during a ceremony meant to celebrate their success. Former tennis star Martina Navratilova also commented online, suggesting the image spoke for itself.
In a separate video from the event, Trump is seen greeting and shaking hands with the male staff members, but not the players, further fuelling discussion online.
The Georgia team later reposted the image on its official account, thanking the White House for the invitation and describing the visit as an honour. The team won the NCAA Division I women’s tennis championship last year and was among several collegiate champions recognised at the event.
One of the team’s top players, Dasha Vidmanova, did not attend due to participation in a tournament in Madrid.
White House visits for championship teams are a long-standing American tradition, although recent years have seen increased political attention around such events and how they are conducted.
The photo has also been compared by commentators to past official images where women or minority groups were visually overshadowed in government settings, reigniting broader debate about representation at public ceremonies.
