Low Electoral Participation Could Harm Governance Quality, Says Otti

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has raised concerns over the growing trend of voter apathy in Nigeria, warning that declining electoral participation could weaken democratic governance and affect national development.

Otti made the remarks while speaking at a public lecture in Lagos, where he reflected on the relationship between citizens’ engagement in elections and the quality of leadership produced.

He noted that when a large portion of the electorate stays away from voting, a small group ends up deciding who governs, which he said undermines the true essence of democracy. According to him, this situation often results in leaders who do not fully reflect the will of the majority.

The governor stressed that civic disengagement contributes to poor accountability, as elected officials may feel less pressure to respond to the needs of the broader population.

He urged Nigerians to take elections more seriously by actively participating in the political process, adding that voting is a key responsibility that shapes the country’s future direction.

Otti also encouraged citizens to remain informed and engaged beyond election periods, saying that sustained public interest in governance is essential for strengthening democratic institutions and improving overall leadership outcomes.
