A coalition of opposition figures, including former Minister of Education Obiageli Ezekwesili, has called on Nigeria’s electoral body to reconsider and extend its timetable for the 2027 general elections. The group argues that the current schedule released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) places unnecessary pressure on political parties, particularly smaller and emerging ones. According to them, the tight timeline could limit internal democratic processes such as primaries, consultations, and candidate selection. They stressed that a more flexible schedule would allow parties to properly organize, strengthen participation, and present credible candidates to voters. The stakeholders also warned that maintaining the existing timeline might undermine inclusiveness and fairness in the electoral process.Ezekwesili and her allies further urged INEC to engage with political parties and other stakeholders to review the timetable in a way that promotes transparency and equal opportunity ahead of the 2027 polls. While INEC has yet to issue an official response, the demand adds to growing conversations about electoral reforms and preparations for the next general election cycle.
