Nigerian Army troops have thwarted a planned media-driven assault by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Bitta town in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, killing several insurgents, including the group’s cameraman. The failed attack was aimed at producing and circulating fear-driven propaganda content online.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. According to the report, ISWAP fighters attempted to storm the town with the objective of capturing and spreading footage to boost their terror narrative on digital platforms.

During a fierce gun battle, the Nigerian forces successfully repelled the militants, neutralising a number of them. Among those killed was a media operative identified by the advanced rugged camcorder and media equipment attached to his gear.

The military recovered the camcorder used in filming the intended propaganda. Intelligence teams are currently reviewing the device’s contents for useful information and further leads.

Security sources confirmed that the materials were part of an effort to distort public perception by glamorising a failed operation and spreading disinformation through manipulated online content.
