Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has lauded Nigeria’s D’Tigress for their historic fifth consecutive FIBA AfroBasket Championship victory.

The Nigerian women’s basketball team defeated Mali 78–64 in Sunday’s final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, Côte d’Ivoire, cementing their dominance in African basketball.

In a statement on Monday, Obi praised the team for their exceptional performance and dedication.

“Congratulations D’TIGRESS, you did it. You played like true queens of the court… Again, you’ve made Nigeria proud, you’ve made Africa proud, and you’ve made history by being the AfroBasket champions five times in a row,” he said.

“Thank you for giving us your absolute best, for pouring your heart into every game, and for showing the world what Nigerian excellence looks like.”

Obi also commended head coach Rene Wakama, stating, “And to Coach Wakama, thank you for your leadership, strategy, and belief in this team—you guided them like a true champion maker.”

D’Tigress extended their unbeaten streak in the tournament to 29 games since 2015, while also securing their seventh overall title (2003, 2005, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2025).

Nigeria’s Amy Okonkwo was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) after an outstanding performance, averaging 14 points and 6 rebounds per game. She scored 19 points in the final against Mali and recorded double-digit points in all but one match.

The team is expected to return to Nigeria on Monday afternoon.
