Five Killed in Limpopo Prison Van Crash

MOOKGOPONG, A police officer and four inmates were killed on Thursday morning when a prison transport vehicle overturned on Naboomspruit Road, outside Mookgopong in Limpopo.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the van was transporting 11 inmates from Mokopane to Mookgopong for a court appearance when the accident occurred.

“Tragically, a SAPS member from Naboomspruit Police Station lost his life, along with four inmates. Several others sustained injuries and have been rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment,” Mashaba confirmed.

He extended condolences to the bereaved families, describing the incident as a “horrific accident” and affirming that the SAPS is providing support to those affected.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
