The Mitchells Plain police precinct on the Cape Flats has been identified as the fifth highest in the country for violent contact crimes, according to recently released police statistics. The area reflects the broader challenges posed by gangsterism, with escalating violence tied to gang-related activities.

In a concerning trend, the prevalence of illegal firearms and rampant drug smuggling have been reported throughout the region. Since April, local authorities have confiscated between 40 and 60 firearms each week and arrested more than 900 individuals for illegal possession of firearms.

Station Commander Brian Muller underscores the severity of the situation. “Mitchells Plain is grappling with significant issues related to gangsterism, with approximately 99% of shootings being gang-related. We’ve identified around 16 distinct gangs operating in the area. Unfortunately, these groups tend to remain concentrated in specific parts of the community, which inevitably leads to conflict. Much of this violence is typically linked to disputes over drug territories, as gang members often encroach on one another’s turf, igniting clashes.”

As law enforcement continues to combat this escalating crisis, community safety remains a top priority in the fight against gangsterism and violent crime in Mitchells Plain.
