Authorities have identified 22-year-old Tyler Robinson as the prime suspect in the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, following an FBI operation that stemmed from a family tipoff.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed Robinson’s arrest at a press briefing, stating, “We got him.” He explained that Robinson’s relatives alerted a friend, who then contacted local law enforcement after the suspect hinted at his involvement.
Investigators revealed that Robinson’s roommate shared Discord messages in which he discussed retrieving a hidden rifle, engraving bullets, and planning his escape. The suspect reportedly described the rifle as “unique” and detailed using a scope.
Surveillance footage placed Robinson at Utah Valley University in a Dodge Challenger on the day of the attack. His outfit—a maroon t-shirt, light shorts, and a black hat—matched eyewitness descriptions. At the scene, police recovered spent casings and an unfired bullet inscribed with the words: “Hey fascist! Catch!”
Governor Cox also noted Robinson’s radicalisation in recent years, pointing to family accounts of him expressing disdain for Kirk and his political views.
Background checks show Robinson moved from Cedar City to Logan in 2022 to study at Utah State University. Social media linked to his family displayed firearm range visits, though posts featuring Robinson himself have been removed.
Former President Donald Trump, speaking on Fox News shortly after the arrest, praised law enforcement and revealed Robinson’s father played a role in turning him in. Trump described Kirk as “like a son” and vowed to posthumously award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, insisting Robinson should face the death penalty.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed Robinson is now in custody, with the investigation shifting to his planning, political motives, and possible accomplices.
