The Federal High Court in Abuja has postponed the trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to October 16, to allow time for the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to submit the findings of his medical examination.

Justice James Omotosho announced the adjournment after being informed that the NMA had yet to finalize and present its report on Kanu’s health status as earlier directed by the court.

The court had previously ordered the NMA to assemble a team of medical professionals from different regions and specialities across Nigeria to conduct an independent assessment of Kanu’s health. The evaluation aims to determine whether he should remain in Department of State Services (DSS) custody or be transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja, for further treatment.

During Wednesday’s proceedings, DSS counsel Suraj S’aad (SAN) explained that the medical board’s report was still being compiled. He requested a one-week adjournment to enable the NMA to conclude its work — a request that was not opposed by the defence team, led by Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN).

Justice Omotosho subsequently granted the request, adjourning the matter to October 16 for the submission of the medical report and further deliberations.

The court had earlier directed the NMA to determine not only Kanu’s fitness to stand trial but also whether the DSS medical facility could adequately cater to his health needs.

“The case is adjourned to 16 October for the report of the Nigerian Medical Association,” Justice Omotosho ruled.
