Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has called on prominent South-East political figures, including Labour Party leader Peter Obi and Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, to join a peaceful march to Aso Rock demanding the release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu.
In a post on his official X account on Tuesday, Sowore urged politicians and persons of conscience from the South-East to move beyond rhetoric and take direct action for Kanu’s freedom.
“I challenge every politician or person of good conscience from the Southeast who says they want Nnamdi Kanu released to stop the rhetoric. Time for action is now. Let’s march to Aso Rock Villa,” Sowore wrote.
He called on governors, senators, lawmakers, traditional rulers, priests, and all Igbo people who support Kanu’s release to participate in the march.
“I will lead this peaceful march to the Aso Rock Villa. No more empty noise. Let Charles Soludo, Senator Abaribe, Governor Alex Otti, Peter Obi, and all others who claim to care step up and join us in person,” he added.
Sowore emphasized that the demonstration would be peaceful, legal, and visible, aimed at demanding justice and an end to what he described as the persecution of Kanu.
This call to action comes amid ongoing legal proceedings against Kanu, who is currently standing trial on terrorism-related charges.
Last month, a Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed Kanu’s no-case submission, ruling that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to warrant that he enter his defence.
Justice James Omotosho fixed October 8 to receive a report from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) concerning Kanu’s health, which will influence the scheduling of the next phase of the trial.
Kanu’s no-case submission followed the conclusion of the government’s presentation of evidence, which included testimony from five witnesses and several exhibits.
