The management of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) has expelled three students who were allegedly caught with firearms during the recently concluded Students’ Union Government (SUG) election.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Awoke, announced the expulsion over the weekend during the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected SUG executives at the university’s main campus in Abakaliki. He described the incident as “unacceptable and criminal,” emphasizing that the decision was taken to send a strong message against violence, cultism, and intimidation within the university community.

According to reports, the Ebonyi State Police Command had earlier arrested the suspects in September after they were allegedly found with guns and live ammunition. The students reportedly fired gunshots to disperse the crowd during the election, and one student was injured in the process. They also allegedly attempted to attack the Dean of Student Affairs.

Professor Awoke stressed that the university would not tolerate such behavior, reaffirming his administration’s zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractice, and any form of violence. He further disclosed that the case was already before a competent court and assured that justice would prevail. “These students are hereby expelled from the university,” he declared, adding that the sanction would serve as a deterrent to others.
