Mounting Waste in Owerri Raises Public Health Concerns

Residents in Owerri, Imo State, are increasingly alarmed as heaps of uncollected rubbish have filled streets and neighbourhoods, raising serious public health concerns. Many fear that the growing waste, especially after recent rains, could create conditions for diseases to spread.

The refuse has become so widespread that some major roads and intersections are partially blocked by decaying trash, making travel difficult for both drivers and pedestrians. Areas around Douglas Road, World Bank Roundabout, Orji, and Egbu Road are among the worst affected.

The stench from rotting garbage is causing discomfort among communities, while warmer weather and rainfall accelerate decomposition. Residents worry that mosquitoes, rodents, and other disease carriers attracted to the waste could trigger outbreaks of illnesses, including viral fevers.

Calls are mounting for authorities to step up sanitation efforts, improve waste collection, and clear refuse dumps before the situation worsens. Many locals stress the need for urgent action to protect public health and restore a cleaner environment in the city.
