Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka stole the spotlight over the weekend, helping Coventry City secure automatic promotion to the English Premier League, as Nigerian players delivered impressive performances across top European leagues.

Onyeka featured for Coventry in their goalless draw against Sheffield Wednesday, a result that sealed their return to the Premier League. The midfielder, on loan from Brentford, was substituted late in the game and is now set to play in the top flight next season, whether with Coventry or his parent club.

In Spain, Akor Adams played a crucial role for Sevilla, converting an early penalty to guide his side to a 2-1 win over Atlético Madrid, easing their relegation fears. The goal marked his eighth in 25 league appearances this season. Meanwhile, Umar Sadiq’s struggles continued as he failed to score in Valencia’s 1-0 loss to Elche, extending his goal drought to seven matches.

In France, Moses Simon ended a five-month wait for a goal contribution, providing an assist as Paris FC stunned AS Monaco 4-1, ending the latter’s 10-game unbeaten run.

Italy saw an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who kept his third consecutive clean sheet in Udinese’s impressive 3-0 victory over AC Milan. The Nigerian shot-stopper has now recorded eight clean sheets this season.

In England, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, and Samuel Chukwueze all featured for Fulham in their 2-0 loss to Liverpool. Ola Aina impressed for Nottingham Forest in their 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, though Taiwo Awoniyi missed the match. Tolu Arokodare came off the bench in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ heavy 4-0 defeat to West Ham.

Elsewhere, Semi Ajayi featured for Hull City but could not prevent their 2-1 loss to Sheffield United, picking up a yellow card in the process.

In Germany, Kevin Akpoguma made a late return to action for Hoffenheim after two months out, while Nathan Tella featured in Bayer Leverkusen’s 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund, boosting their chances of a top-four finish.

Overall, it was a mixed but eventful weekend for Nigerian players abroad, highlighted by Onyeka’s promotion success and key contributions from several Super Eagles stars.
