Students Back Youth Minister, Dismiss Allegations as Political Distraction

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected what it describes as attempts to discredit the Minister of Youth Development, Ayo Olawande, insisting that recent allegations against him are unfounded and politically motivated.

In a statement issued by its Senate President, Usman Adamu Nagwaza, the student body said it had observed with concern what it called a coordinated effort by unnamed individuals to tarnish the Minister’s reputation through misinformation and negative publicity.

NANS maintained that while it supports accountability in governance, criticism must be fair, evidence-based, and not driven by personal or political interests. It warned that turning public discourse into character attacks only undermines national development and youth-focused progress.

The association also highlighted what it described as positive strides by the Minister in areas such as youth empowerment, skills development, entrepreneurship support, and increased engagement with student groups across the country.

According to NANS, Olawande has demonstrated commitment to youth inclusion in governance and has strengthened programmes aimed at job creation and innovation among young Nigerians. It added that such efforts should be encouraged rather than subjected to what it termed smear campaigns.

The group urged critics to focus on constructive engagement and policy-driven dialogue, stressing that Nigeria’s development depends on cooperation rather than hostility.

In conclusion, NANS reaffirmed its support for initiatives that advance youth development and called for unity among stakeholders in building opportunities for young people across the country.
