The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the violent attack on a broadcast journalist in Port Harcourt, describing it as unacceptable and a threat to press freedom.
The journalist, identified as Allwell Ene of a local radio network, was reportedly assaulted by a group of hoodlums while carrying out an assignment in the Garrison Junction area of the city. The attackers allegedly questioned his presence, and upon discovering he was a reporter, descended on him, leaving him injured and dispossessed of his belongings.
He sustained injuries to his eyes and other parts of his body during the incident, while his phone and other valuables were taken away. The victim later confirmed that he had reported the matter to the police and met with the Commissioner of Police, who assured him that investigations were underway.
In response, the Rivers State Police Command confirmed it has launched a probe into the attack and promised that those responsible would be identified and brought to justice. The NUJ also urged security agencies to act swiftly and ensure journalists are protected while performing their duties.
