Adewole Emmanuel, a 400-level medical student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has died after reportedly collapsing shortly before his final examination.
His death was confirmed on Thursday in a statement issued by the Ife University Medical Students Association (IFUMSA), which expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Emmanuel as a key member of his class.
“With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of one of our own, an integral part of the association and a strong pillar of his class,” the statement read.
The association described the late student as a colleague, friend, and roommate with a promising future that was tragically cut short. It added that his passing represents a painful loss to the IFUMSA community.
“This is not only a sad moment but a deeply painful one, as we have lost a rising star and a cherished member of our family,” the statement added.
IFUMSA also urged the public to avoid speculation and respect the privacy of Emmanuel’s family during this difficult time.
A senior member of the association, who spoke anonymously, disclosed that the incident occurred on Wednesday while students were preparing to sit for their final examination.
“He was not known to be ill. He suddenly collapsed while we were waiting for the exam to begin and could not be revived,” the source said.
The association confirmed that Emmanuel’s family has been contacted.
His sudden death has left colleagues and the university community in shock.
