The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reportedly ordered a ban on Point of Sale (POS) operators conducting business within 200 metres of police stations across Nigeria following growing allegations of extortion involving some police officers and POS agents.
According to reports, the directive is part of renewed efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to curb illegal financial transactions and restore public confidence in police operations nationwide. The police leadership expressed concern over accusations that some officers allegedly collaborate with POS operators to extort members of the public.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that the continued presence of POS terminals around police facilities poses serious risks, including financial misconduct, compromise of sensitive information, and other illicit activities.
The police authorities warned that any command or formation found violating the directive would face strict disciplinary measures. Officers and POS operators caught engaging in unauthorized financial dealings within or around police facilities may also face criminal prosecution.
The renewed crackdown follows several public complaints and viral incidents linking some police officers to extortion through electronic payment channels, including POS terminals located close to police stations.
