Emergency services rushed to Suncoast Beach in Durban on Thursday after a small aircraft plunged into the ocean during an apparent aerial display.
According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, videos circulating on social media show the light aircraft performing stunts before striking the surf.
The incident occurred close to Durban’s Virginia Airport, a hub for light aircraft activity.
“Initial reports indicate that the aircraft was conducting display manoeuvres when it crashed into the ocean,” Jamieson said. “The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and lifeguards are on the scene, while paramedics stand ready to provide medical assistance.”
Details about the pilot’s condition and the cause of the crash have not yet been confirmed. Authorities remain at the scene.
