The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has demanded the immediate suspension of the nationwide enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) policy, which began on October 2 following directives from Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.
The Police had announced that vehicles with tinted windows must now present valid permits or face sanctions, citing the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004, as a critical security measure.
But the NBA, in a letter to the IGP, argued that the policy’s legality is still being challenged before the Federal High Court, describing the enforcement as unlawful. The association expressed outrage after police officers in Delta State impounded a vehicle belonging to a National Industrial Court judge during the exercise.
Kunle Edun (SAN), Chairman of NBA’s Special Public Interest Litigation Committee, said the body has activated human rights committees in all 130 branches nationwide to provide free legal services to affected motorists.
“We shall invoke the powers of the court to ensure that the police do not trample on the rights of Nigerians,” Edun stated, urging citizens harassed under the policy to seek pro bono assistance from NBA branches.
The NBA also warned against turning the police into a “revenue-generating agency,” alleging the enforcement could rake in over N3 billion monthly while diverting attention from core policing duties.
