Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold economic reforms, saying the policies have stabilised the nation’s economy and prevented a possible collapse.
Aiyedatiwa made the remark during an interactive session with student representatives from tertiary institutions across Ondo State, held in Akure. The meeting focused on economic hardship, education, and student welfare.
The governor acknowledged the current economic challenges but insisted that the reforms were already producing positive results.
> “It’s a temporary hardship that is easing up. The reforms are yielding benefits and making the economy better,” Aiyedatiwa said. “If these reforms had not been implemented, Nigeria would have been worse off today.”
He praised student leaders across the state for maintaining peace and avoiding violent protests since his assumption of office.
> “I commend you all for conducting yourselves responsibly. Since I became governor, there has been no case of student unrest. You have engaged government constructively and peacefully,” he noted.
Aiyedatiwa stressed the importance of government–private sector collaboration in tackling infrastructure and accommodation challenges in tertiary institutions. He cited the ongoing reconstruction of the accident-prone Akungba-Akoko road, near Adekunle Ajasin University, as part of his administration’s commitment to student safety.
> “We had to reconstruct that road because of the high rate of accidents. It’s a complex project, but we have started and will complete it,” he assured.
The governor also reiterated his administration’s focus on technical and vocational education as a key driver of industrial development and youth employment.
> “We are paying more attention to technical education. Investors are coming, and they will need skilled labour,” he said.
Addressing power supply issues at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Aiyedatiwa promised immediate government intervention to ensure steady electricity for learning and research.
As part of his student welfare agenda, the governor announced the approval of five new buses for student associations across tertiary institutions in the state, pledging further support in the months ahead.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Segun Omoyofunmi, commended the governor’s proactive engagement with young people and his approval of increased bursaries and scholarships for students.
Omoyofunmi also highlighted the introduction of an under-17 football competition as part of the administration’s drive to empower youths and nurture future leaders in Ondo State.
